Monostotic Fibrous Dysplasia of the Axis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Fibrous dysplasia (FD) represents approximately 2.5% of all bone neoplasms. Monostotic FD (MFD) is more common than polyostotic FD. However, polyostotic forms occur in the spine more frequently, and MFD involving the spine is quite rare. To the best of our knowledge, only 16 cases of MFD involving the cervical spine have been reported. As a result of the rarity, the natural history and ideal treatment of this entity are poorly understood.
