The Berlin Questionnaire: Performance of the Persian Version for Measuring Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Sleep Clinic Population

Background: The Berlin questionnaire (BQ) is one of the most well-known instruments for evaluating subjects at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The main purpose of this study was to translate the BQ into Persian and determine its performance for detecting OSA in sleep clinic population. Methods: Standard forward-backward method was used for translation. A sample of 523 sleep clinic patients filled in the BQ in the next morning after the polysomnography (PSG). Spearman correlation was used for evaluating relationships among three categories and the total score of the BQ with characteristics of patients. Reliability of the BQ was assessed by internal consistency and test-retest analysis. Validity of the BQ was performed using the sensitivity analysis. The apnea hypopnea index (AHI) on the PSG was used as gold standard for OSA diagnosis.
